Counseling the Mates and Families of Rape Victims

  • Chapter
The Rape Crisis Intervention Handbook

Abstract

Male mates and family members may find it difficult to respond to the female rape victim in an empathic and supportive manner for a variety of cognitive and emotional reasons. The purpose of this chapter is to describe common patterns of reaction among the husbands, boyfriends, and family members of rape victims; to outline the dynamics of such responses and their effects on the relationships involved; and to offer technical suggestions to the counselor, who must deal not only with the intense feelings of mates and family members but also with his or her own emotional responses to the affectively laden topic of rape victimization.
