Collective excitations are an essential part of the dynamics of magnets even with only short range order. Recently it has become clear that not only the well known spin waves have to be considered, but in certain cases nonlinear modes like solitons too. In this review experimental results obtained by inelastic neutron scattering for the linear as well as for the nonlinear modes in 1-D-Magnets are discussed and compared with theory. It is shown that most of the properties of the linear excitations are understood whereas in the case where nonlinear modes contribute the dynamics are not fully understood yet. Results for the following systems are discussed: TMMC (x-y-antiferromagnet), CPC (S = 1/2-Heisenberg-antiferromagnet), CsNiF3 (x-y-ferromagnet). In all these systems the linear excitations have been studied in great detail whereas nonlinear modes have been observed in CsNiF3 only.
