After first contact with the erythrocytic forms of malaria parasites, the host’s defense response develops in two successive steps. The first, which occurs soon after infection, is nonspecific in nature and consists of phagocytosis of the parasites by RE-cells in the liver, spleen and bone-marrow (13,15,16). The second step, which is triggered by antigenic recognition, is characterized by specific proliferation of B and T-lymphocytes, immunoglobulin production and macrophage activation (4). In contrast, little is known about initial host defense response towards sporozoites and tissue forms of the parasite. At least, one can state that it must exist, since repeated administration of Freund’s adjuvant to mice, prior to parasite inoculation, increases host resistance against infection by the sporozoites of P. berghei (17).
