Abstract

This chapter serves as an introduction to the concept of rehabilitation for alcoholism and drug abuse rather than a definitive discussion of all aspects of care. It can be read for general knowledge, for guidelines for appropriate referral of patients, as a framework for the critical evaluation of programs, or as a basis for development of your own treatment efforts. I will first present a series of general rules that (with modifications) fit rehabilitation for all substance misusers. This is followed by a discussion of guidelines specifically tailored to particular drug approaches.
