An excellent introductory reference to the entire subject of surface states can be found in the article “Electron States at Clean Surfaces” by F. Forstmann, which appears in the book “Photoemission and the Electronic Properties of Surfaces” edited by B. Feuerbacher, B. Fitton and R.F. Willis (John Wiley and Sons, (1978)).
