High Strength Furnace-Drawn Optical Fibers

  • Chapter
Fiber Optics

Abstract

The tensile strength of optical fibers, drawn with a zirconia induction furnace, coated with a silicone-nylon composite, and tested using 20 meter gauge lengths is reported. By controlling the process variables, kilometer lengths of fiber with strengths greater than 4.2 GN/m2 (600 kpsi) have been produced. The effects of preform surface treatment, drawing conditions, and atmospheric particulates on the long-length strength of fibers are discussed. Strengths of fibers drawn from MCVD preforms were found to be highly dependent on the type of support tube used but were independent of the deposited core glass.
