Abstract

Bistable optical devices are discussed in a broader context in which optical signals play a role comparable to electronic signals in performing device functions. Several examples of bistable devices are described and analyzed, and both steady state and transient properties are discussed. Compact versions of these devices are compatible in principle with fiber optic systems.
