Abstract

Evidence has been presented in the pig that an oocyte maturation inhibitor (OMI) may be responsible for keeping the oocyte in meiotic arrest in the first prophase (1). This inhibitor is present in the fluid of antral porcine follicles. Partial purification has revealed it to be a small polypeptide with a molecular weight in the order of 2000 (2). This inhibitor prevents the spontaneous resumption of meiosis in cultured cumulus-enclosed porcine oocytes. Its inhibitory effect can be overcome by luteinizing hormone (LH) (3) and it can be reversed by removing the factor from the culture medium (4).
