Abstract
The searching histological studies of Stieve on human ovaries permitted, for the first time, a classification of follicles into 6 stages (see Mestwerdt et al. 1977). These purely light-microscopic investigations afforded, however, only partial insight into the specific cellular activities of different tissue layers in the individual follicle stages.
