Abstract

Studies utilizing gnotobiotic rodents have clearly shown that certain bacteria including Streptococcus mutans can induce dental caries (1–3). Since caries is an infectious disease, it is not surprising that recent efforts have been made to control this disease, especially in light of successful vaccines developed for other infectious diseases caused by bacteria (for a survey, see 4). Most studies of caries immunity have been performed in rodents.
