Cell Mediated Immune Responses to Bacterial Antigens on Human Mucosal Surfaces

Abstract

Recently, the in vitro correlates of cell-mediated immunity to viral antigens have been demonstrated in human tonsillar tissue lymphocytes (TTL) and peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) (1,2). It has been suggested that human TTL respond differently from PBL to purified protein derivative (PPD) and mitogens (3). Human PBL have been stimulated by oral bacterial antigens and increased responses have been observed in subjects with chronic oral infections such as gingivitis or periodontitis (4,5).
