Abstract
Although deeply entrenched in the folklore of condensed matter physics the phonon concept is of limited validity. Even with the most direct technique for studying phonons, neutron inelastic scattering, it is not possible in principle to distinguish between the one-phonon response and the multiphonon background.

A.K. McMahan and H. Beck, Phys. Rev. A 8, 3247 (1973) show that Horner’s subsidiary peaks are enhanced by the sparseness of his mesh used for \(\vec q\) -space sums, and by his inclusion of V(3) within the iterative loop. The iterative procedure diverges for a V(3)/V(2) ratio slightly larger than that used by Horner.
