Abstract

Park and Brody (13) have shown that phenobarbital markedly affects cellular immunity even at therapeutically prescribed dosages. A number of the narcotic analgesics and psychotomimetic drugs has been shown to markedly reduce production of interferon in random-bred mice (6,10). Although many investigators have concentrated their efforts on the effects of various drugs on cellular immunity, some attention has recently been directed toward humoral immunity. It has been reported that morphine as well as A-9-tetra-hydrocannabinol (THC) markedly affect the development of plaque forming cells (PFC) in the spleens of mice immunized with sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) (8,9). Impairment of cellular immunity in human chronic marijuana smokers was also reported (5). The drug caffeine has also been shown to be immunosuppressive in mice (7, 9).
