Spontaneous Autoimmune Thyroiditis in the BUF Rat

  • Chapter
The Reticuloendothelial System in Health and Disease

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 73B))

Abstract

The immune system has remarkable ability to distinguish self from non-self. Autoimmune diseases represent exceptions to the general rule of self-recognition. Their study provides clues about the basis of the rule. In most human autoimmune diseases of solid tissues, one sees infiltration by macrophages, plasma cells and eosinophils in addition to large numbers of lymphocytes. Autoimmune lesions may be the result of damage initiated by autoantibodies, by lymphocytes sensitized to self-antigen, by activated macrophages, or by the two or more of these factors combined.
