Abstract
Both cellular and humoral immune responses are known to be regulated by mechanisms that are incompletely understood, especially with respect to delayed hypersensitivity (DH). Injection of soluble or alum-precipitated antigen near the time of sensitization prevents the development of DH and the synthesis of the gamma-2 class of antibody, leaving the gamma-1 class unaffected (1,3). Moreover, established DH is suppressed by systemic administration of specific antigen (6). Antigen-induced suppression of the induction and expression of DH has been termed “immune deviation” and “desensitization”, respectively. These experimental phenomena are thought to have counterparts in certain granulomatous diseases in which skin-test anergy is a prominent feature.
