Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 73))

Abstract

Increasing evidence points to the importance of many functions of the RES in the normal resistance to trauma and in the subsequent repair of the tissue. Together with the fact that infections, bacteremia, lung disturbances and neoplastic spread are nowadays becoming increasingly important following severe trauma and major surgery, the RES is becoming a challenging object of shock research. It is apparent that the greatly improved intensive care of the severely ill patient permits the appearance of malfunctions of the immune response which previously remained undetected because of the short survival of such patients. Illustrated by an actual burn case, an attempt will be made to review the effects on the RES of trauma and shock per se as well as the effects of modern shock treatment.
