Distribution of Local Oxygen Consumption in Resting Skeletal Muscle

  • Chapter
Oxygen Transport to Tissue VII

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 191))

Abstract

Skeletal muscle tissue is composed of muscle fibers of different metabolic types. Therefore, the oxygen consumption rate, VO2, is expected to vary within the tissue. An appropriate principle to determine these local differences is perfusion stop, because the tissue PO2 drop, reflecting VO2, can be measured at sufficient high spatial resolution by oxygen microelectrodes.
