Biosynthetic Pathways of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids

Function and Biosynthesis of Lipids

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 83))

Abstract

The type and amount of any unsaturated fatty acid found in lipids must be regulated by integrated control mechanisms directed both towards unsaturated fatty acid and lipid biosynthesis. The types and amounts of unsaturated fatty acids produced must be determined both by the number of enzymes involved in this process and the substrate specificity of these enzymes. In addition those factors which influence enzyme activity must also regulate the rate at which unsaturated fatty acids are produced. The results presented below summarize the studies carried out in our laboratory in an attempt to further determine what regulates unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis.
