Abstract
Half a century ago, George and Mildred Burr were beginning their studies on the effects of a fat-free diet upon rats (Burr and Burr 1929, 1930). Since that time, the story of essential fatty acids (EFA) has progressed to the point that it is now finding practical application in medical nutrition. It will be the purpose of this presentation to trace some of the steps along the way from the first publication in 1929 to the current intense interest in the essential fatty acid deficiency which now is a common occurrence in patients receiving intravenous alimentation. The subject has been reviewed in more detail several times and the reader who wishes more information should turn to those references (Holman, 1971a; Holman, 1971b; Mead, 1971; Burr, 1942; Alfin-Slater & Aftergood, 1976).
