Abstract

The two kininogenases of plasma are kallikrein and plasmin (1). of these proteases kallikrein is more specific, acting almost exclusively on kininogen, whereas plasmin has a much wider spectrum of action, capable of degrading a number of non-specific proteins, e.g. casein. Both enzymes hydrolyse arginine esters, but while kallikrein has little effect on lysine esters, these synthetic substrates are readily hydrolysed by plasmin. Both enzymes are present in plasma as zymogens or proenzymes, kallikrein as prekallikrein (2) and plasmin as plasminogen (3).
