Abstract

Histamine is a well-known pain producing substance; and its acute administration in essential headache provokes or exacerbates the ache; the chronic administration of histamine can improve headache, probably through a sort of desensitization at the level of the nociceptors. Other pain producing substances, such as kinins, can take part in the mechanism of the histamine desensitization; in fact, histamine and the histamine liberator 48/80, when acutely administered, are able to lower the plasma kininogen level in man (1). Interactions between histamine and the kailikrein-kinin system have been shown by other authors (2,3,4,5,6).
