The Genetics of Chicken 7S Immunoglobulin Allotypes

Abstract

Studies on the phylogeny of immunoglobulins (Ig) focus on the structural similarities and differences between the Ig of various vertebrate species. Such structural comparisons, particularly those utilizing amino acid sequencing data, have been used to reveal the theoretical evolution of Ig structural genes. Evolutionary genetic mechanisms, such as complete gene duplication, partial gene duplication, and gene fusion are common postulates of phylogenetic theory (1). Yet, there is a paucity of information on the genetic organization of the Ig structural genes in non-mammals. With hopes of obtaining this kind of information in avian species, we have begun studies on the genetic organization of chicken 7S Ig structural genes.
