Abstract

Parenteral administration is an abnormal mode of alimentation. With regard to amino acid intake, the normal sequence of events involves metabolic changes in the intestine and screening of the incoming amino acids by the liver before they pass into the peripheral circulation. Once in the systemic plasma, the level of free amino acids is only moderately elevated after each protein meal of normal composition, thus implying that tissue removal of amino acids is adequate to prevent accumulation when the amino acid supply is delivered at a steady rate by way of the intestinal tract.
