Abstract

The first successful parenteral feeding of a human based on sound theoretical and experimental principles was carried out by Abderhalden et al. (1909) in a 9-year old child. As early as 1939, several investigators (Farr et al., 1939; Shohl et al., 1939) infused casein hydrolysates intravenously into children and obtained positive nitrogen balances. There is currently an extensive pre-and postoperative climical experience concerning complete parenteral nutrition of newborns suffering from severe anomalies of the intestinal tract and severely ill infants in whom for various reasons a sufficient oral nutrition is not possible (Børresen et al., 1970; Dudrick et al., 1970; Dudrick, 1971; Erdmann, 1970; Farr and MacFadyen, 1939; Filler et al., 1969; Heine and Kirchmair, 1963; Hofert et al., 1971; Kirchmair and Heine, 1967; Schmidt, 1966; Wilmore et al., 1969). Major operations of the intestinal tract in neonates were made possible only because of parenteral nutrition (Dudrick et al., 1970; Dudrick, 1971; Wilmore et al., 1969). Certainly it appears that parenteral nutrition will provide an important advance in the clinical management of a variety of newborn problems associated with caloric restriction.
