Abstract
The steroidal oestrogens are produced primarily in the ovary and are conveyed in the blood to their sites of action in different parts of the body. The blood transport is mediated by attachment to plasma proteins (1,2). Hence it is legitimate to think of these and other steroids as chemically defined serum factors. Study of the mode whereby these steroids exert their biological effect is of interest both from the aspect of ways in which relatively simple molecules affect cell activity and as a tool to see how the less well-understood serum factors work (3).
