Abstract
As the lateral hypothalamus is definitely involved in drinking and the control of other ingestive motor acts, it seemed reasonable to assume several years ago that electrical stimulation of this interesting region of the brain might change the preference-aversion taste function for ethanol in the rat. Shortly thereafter, in addition to reviewing the literature in support of such an hypothesis [9], we were able to demonstrate that lateral hypothalamic (LH) sodium sensitive neurons implicated in drinking were also very sensitive to ethyl alcohol and to confirm an earlier report [1] that LH electrical stimulation results in an increased consumption of a previously determined aversive ethanol solution.
