Abstract

Wright demonstrated in 1941 that platelets adhere to glass (102). Her approach was revived by Hellem’s work in 1960 (40), which led to the discovery of the effect of ADP on platelets. Since then, there has been considerable interest in developing simplified laboratory procedures to measure platelet adhesiveness. It is usually assessed by methods utilizing the tendency of platelets to adhere to glass. Platelet counts are performed before and after blood has been exposed to a glass surface for variable periods of time. Platelet adhesiveness is expressed as the number of adhered platelets or,more commonly, as the percentage of platelets which adhere or stick to the beads.
