Blood Rheology after Hemorrhage and Endotoxin

  • Chapter
Neurohumoral and Metabolic Aspects of Injury

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 33))

Abstract

Since blood viscosity increases markedly as the shear rate is reduced (1–6), the elevation of blood viscosity may conceivably play a role in the pathogenesis of low flow states. In this paper the factors regulating blood viscosity in different flow conditions will be considered and the possible role of rheological changes in endotoxin and hemorrhagic shock in the dog will be analyzed.
