Decreased 2,3-Diphosphoglycerate and Reduced Oxygen Delivery Following Massive Transfusion and Septicemic Shock

  • Chapter
Neurohumoral and Metabolic Aspects of Injury

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 33))

Abstract

Oxygen delivery has been demonstrated to be inadequate in patients in septicemic shock as manifested by an elevated mixed venous O2 saturation (1). The subsequent narrow arterio-venous (A-V) O2 content difference has been attributed to pre-capillary A-V shunting (2). Other possible causes could be decreased mitochondrial utilization of O2 (3) and decreased release of O2 from hemoglobin (4).
