The Effect of Massive Transfusion of Stored Blood on Oxygen Transport — A Preliminary Report

Recently Lemieux et al. reported that skeletal muscle pH is a reliable index of both arterial pH and tissue perfusion in dogs subjected to hemorrhage, acidosis and alkalosis. (1,2,3,) The combination glass pH electrode probe was redesigned and miniaturized so that it could be easily applied and secured on the surface muscle of an infant. In 53 critically ill infants and children, muscle surface pH was recorded for periods up to 100 hours. The clinical findings correlated with the experimental results and indicated that muscle pH is a reflection of both arterial pH and the adequacy of tissue perfusion. (4,5)
