Abstract
Extracellular facilitation of CO2 transport by human red cell carbonic anhydrase has been demonstrated. Inhibition of this facilitation by DDT concentrated in the red cell membrane has also been shown, as well as the retention of a minor but significant amount of enzyme activity in washed bovine and human red cell ghosts. These findings are compatible with the concept that an appreciable catalytic effect on the hydration of extracellular CO2 is due to carbonic anhydrase associated with the cell membrane.
