Rapid advances of the in vitro techniques, plus rapid advances in the knowledge of metabolic diseases, mostly inborn errors of metabolism, made possible the diagnosis of an increasing number of diseases. The last in vitro technique to be used is the culture of amniotic cells obtained by amniocentesis; we would like to present a brief resumé of what has been done until now and investigate some of the major problems inherent to that method.
