Several Pharmacologic and Biochemical Aspects of Cysteamine- and Cystamine-Induced Shock

Abstract

Cysteamine [HSCH2CH2NH2] and cyst amine [(H2NCH2 CH2)2S2]provide remarkable protection against the action of ionizing radiation (1, 2). Numerous attempts to explain, the mode of action, of these substances followed the initial discovery of their radioprotective effects by Bacq and coworkers in 1951 (3). The present study was undertaken in order to elucidate the cardiovascular properties of these radioprotectors. A clearer understanding of their effect on oxygen, distribution at the cellular level seemed desirable, since anoxia is known to provoke marked biochemical changes which enhance cellular radioresistance.
