Abstract
Carrageenin has kininogen depleting properties in the rat (1). Its local oedema inducing effects are inhibited by phenylbutazone and other non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs. The kaolin induced elevation of kinin activity in the rat oedema fluid is also counteracted by phenylbutazone, while this drug is unable to inhibit the polyvinylpyrrolidone induced oedema, where a lack of increased kinin activity was demonstrated (2). In the present work additional support is given to the postulation that the antiinflammatory action of phenylbutazone may partly be due to its interference with the kallikrein-kinin system.
