Metabolism of 14C-Bradykinin in Man

Although kinins have been implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological conditions, often definitive proof of their involvement has been lacking. This situation exists because: 1) specific blockers of kinin liberation or utilization are not available, 2) kinins and related enzymes and proteins are difficult to measure, and 3) there are no known metabolites of kinins. In an attempt to get at some of the problems, the National Heart Institute has financed the synthesis of radioactive kinins and made them available to qualified researchers (1,2). The radioactive peptides have been invaluable in the development of a radioimmunoassay for bradykinin (3,4), the elucidation of a proteolytic mechanism of kinin inactivation in lung (5), the characterization of kinins in human urine (6), and, as reported here, study of the kinetics of kinin metabolism and characterization of urinary metabolites in man.
