Enzymatic System and the Formation of a Vasopressor Albumin in the Incubated Plasma
Intravenous injection of vasoactive albumin (VA) formed in the blood plasma under prolonged incubation at 38°C produces an increase of the blood pressure in the rat (1, 2, 3) and dog (4). The pressor changes were found to be dose related and not inhibited by previous injections of alpha or beta adrenergic receptor blocking agents (5). However a rapid and striking blood pressure fall occurred when the incubated plasma or its VA was injected intravenously in the cat and rabbit. The effect is attributed to a general vasodilatation that is not inhibited by atropine (6). These results, plus the evidence that some activation of the kallikrein system takes place in the blood leaving the vascular bed, gave rise to the impression that the vasodepressor effect of the VA in the cat was secondary to a kallikrein-like activity shared by the same molecule or by an unknown contaminant.
