The Isolation and Partial Characterization of Kinin-Forming Enzymes and Other Active Components From Human Plasma

Abstract

Three years ago in Ribeirão Prêto we presented evidence that antigen-antibody (Ag-Ab) precipitates can activate the kinin system if such precipitates are incubated with non-glass contacted guinea pig, rabbit or human serum. Such activated serum acquires the following properties: (a). It enhances vessel permeability when injected intradermally into guinea pigs pretreated with the antihistamine mepyramine. (b). It contracts the rat uterus; a reaction inhibited by carboxypeptidase-B, but not by serotonin antagonists. (c). It has TAME-esterase activity. (d). It enhances the clotting of recalcified plasma. (e). It causes hypotension when injected intravenously. Several serine esterase inhibitors suppress the permeability enhancing activity of Ag-Ab treated serum (6).
