Abstract
Analytical and experimental research conducted on ceramic materials in order to evaluate pertinent material properties in the deep-ocean environment is presented. Areas investigated include evaluation of brittle material failure criteria, determination of meaningful material properties, fortification of ceramics by rubber, ductile or induced compressive layers, modification of graphites by high temperature-high pressure infiltration, corrosion resistance of ceramic materials, and vehicle fabrication feasibility. Results of the various investigations are compiled and evaluated with regard to deep-ocean requirements and recommendations are offered for future research.
