Abstract

Experimental results on delayed failure of FN borosilicate glass fused silica, and polycrystalline alumina are presented and compared with previous results on soda-lime silicate glasses. For higher stresses the results for the glasses fit on a universal curve; at lower stresses the reduced time for failure for FN and fused silica becomes longer than for soda-lime glass. The alumina data show a different slope than those for the glasses, implying a different corrosion reaction.

Static fatigue data define conditions for proof tests for ceramic parts subject to load. A plot of log stress against log failure time is particularly valuable for this definition, and allows one to calculate the time and stress for a convenient proof test.
