Abstract
The thermodynamics of ceramic oxide corrosion by sulphur and oxygen-hearing atmospheres are considered. The conditions under which condensed sulphates and sulphides are expected to form, and in some cases volatile sulphides, are presented graphically in a chemical potential diagram which makes it possible to determine the total composition of the gas phase with respect to SO, SO2 and SO3 for any pair of sulphur and oxygen potentials in a simple and rapid way. Finally y indications concerning the choice of refractory materials in sulphur-bearing furnace atmospheres are obtained from an empirical correlation involving the radius of the cation in the sulphides and oxides.
