Abstract

“Wear Metal Analysis” is the process of monitoring items of operating equipment for mechanical condition by analyzing their fluid lubricants for trace metals content. In the narrow sense, this definition applies only to the analyses and judgments of the monitoring laboratory; in the broad sense, it applies to the complete cycle of operations involved in the monitoring process. Since it would not be possible to treat this subject completely, and in detail, in one short paper, this discussion will necessarily be limited to a brief summary of the essential requirements, plus a progress report on the Department of Defense Equipment Oil Analysis Program.
