Abstract
Pipemidic acid (1) is a new synthetic antibacterial agent having a pyridopyrimidine ring which follows piromidic acid (2). Their chemical structures are shown in Fig. 1. Compared to analogous agents like piromidic acid and nalidixic acid (3), it has some interesting chemotherapeutic properties such as excellent antibacterial potency against gram-negative organisms including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and bacteria resistant to nalidixic acid, oral efficacy on experimental animal infections due to gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is generally higher than the effect of piromidic acid, nalidixic acid, cephalexin, ampicillin and carbenicillin, and good distribution to tissues, whose levels are generally higher than the plasma level.
