Abstract
Investigations carried out in 1973 by M.B. Corrêa Lima et al. (1) afforded the first conclusive demonstration in a relatively large number of cases that cephacetrile penetrates into the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with purulent meningitis. In purulent meningitis the meninges become more permeable to the substances and also to serum proteins and substances bound to them. In the normal course of healing, their permeability diminishes again. If the meningitis is associated with some disturbance retarding the excretion of an antibiotic, e.g. renal isufficiency, the resultant elevation of the serum concentration can lead to an increase in the concentrations in the CSF, since there is a state of equilibrium between the serum-water and the CSF-water (cf. Fig. 2).
