Abstract

Brotzu (1948) showed that filtrates of the fungus Cephalosporium acremonium had strong antibiotic activity against many gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Further investigation revealed that this fungus contained three distinct antibiotics. One of these was labeled cephalosporin C and was of special interest because of its action on penicillin-resistant staphylococci and gram-negative organisms.
