Antibiotic Activities Inside Leucocytes

  • Chapter
Book cover Pharmacology of Antibiotics

Part of the book series: Chemotherapy ((CT,volume 4))

Abstract

Leucocytes are the basis of host responses to infection after the body surfaces have been breached. The sequence of their actions has been closely studied and involves an initial rapid exudation of phagocytic cells followed by a more gradual development of specific immunity (Raeburn 1974). Although humans who have bacterial infections usually receive antibiotic therapy, it is often forgotten that such treatment is only a complement to the existing leucocyte defenses. For therapy to be fully successful the antibiotic regime must be co-ordinated with these innate defenses.
