Abstract
Serum concentrations of antibiotics have been used as a clinical guide to adequacy of therapy. However, these values do not necessarily reflect the antimicrobial activities outisde the vascular compartment. Levels of antimicrobial agents in some extravascular fluids such as aqueous humor, synovial fluids, cerebrospinal fluid and saliva, have been reported. However, these may not represent the actual interstitial fluid activities because of the specialized nature of the membranes and secretory mechanisms of the tissues involved.
