Abstract

Amoxycillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin with a broad spectrum of activity similar to that of ampicillin. Amoxycillin given orally is better absorbed than ampicillin and gives serum levels approximately twice as high as those obtained with the same dose of ampicillin (Rolinson). As ampicillin, alone in one or two doses or combined with probenicid, has proved highly effective in the treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhoea in males and females (Eriksson) it is quite natural that also amoxycillin has been evaluated for the treatment of gonorrhoea. Several studies (Alergant 1973, Braff 1974, Deal et al. 1974, Gurwith et al. 1974, Karney et al 1974, Roberts 1974, Willcox 1974 and Wolk 1974) have shown that a dose of 3 g of amoxycillin alone, or a smaller dose combined with probenicid, is very effective in the treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhoea.
