Surface Structures and Antibiotic Targets in the Gonococcus

  • Chapter
Special Problems in Chemotherapy

Part of the book series: Chemotherapy ((CT,volume 3))

Summary

All four colony types of N. gonorrhoeae possess pit-like structures in the outer membrane of their envelopes. A stable, piliated strain GC1 of intermediate colony morphology also possesses this structural feature. Isolated envelopes of gonococcal strain GC1 and T1 have an active D-alanine carboxypeptidase. This membrane-bound enzyme in GC1 has an alkaline pH optimum, a Km of 0. 25 mM and is sensitive to inhibition by penicillin G, ampicillin, cloxacillin and methicillin. An active phospholipase A is present in GC1, Ti and T4 envelopes, the activity is stimulated by methanol (30%) and the enzyme converts phosphatidylethanolamine to lysophosphatidylethanolamine. It is suggested that such an enzyme could modulate barrier properties of the outer membrane.
