Abstract

Expansion machinery is widely used for producing refrigeration in low temperature processing. Either reciprocating or turbomachinery is employed, depending principally on the combination of volume flow and pressure conditions under which the machine must operate. In general, engines are used where the inlet pressure and head to be expanded is relatively high, particularly in combination with low volume flow. Good efficiency, reliability, and low first cost make turbomachines attractive in the area where the combination of capacity and head suits their characteristics.
