Production and Properties of a New Porous Bearing

Abstract

When a shaft turns in a self-lubricating bearing, the oil circulates around the shaft. If a force is applied to the shaft, the clearance between the shaft and the bearing is reduced in the direction of the stress. Therefore the oil is forced into an increasingly small section. As a result the oil pressure increases in the zone of lesser clearance. This pressure prevents any contact between the shaft and the bearing. A depression occurs in the opposing bearing zone (Fig. 1).
